THE HIROSHIMA DAY MARCH

MEDIA RELEASE! MEDIA RELEASE!

HOROSHIMA DAY 2008 MARCH

Rally for Peace and a Nuclear Free Future!

Nuclear Free Australia (NFA) says NO, to no uranium mining, no war and no nuclear weapons! In protest thousands of people will be rallying for peace and a nuclear free future at the State Library on Saturday 9th August, 2008 at 1 pm. This is in support and tribute of the many lives that were lost unnecessarily in 1945, when the US Military force dropped bombs on Hiroshima City and three days later on Nagasaki in Japan, resulting in the deaths of over 200,000 people and the serious injury of many more. The consequences of the US governments decision to do this has had drastic worldwide ramifications which we still have to deal with today. We are not alone in this, there are many endorses who will accompany us in this active demonstration, showing the world that as a nation, Australia will not tolerate nuclear warfare to occur on our shores. Among the many campaigners and not inclusive of is the Japanese of Peace who will end the march with a peace festival at 3 – 5 pm at Melbourne Town hall, with acoustic music and dance.

One of the speakers on the day, Jacob Grech from Ozpeace believes that military production and the largest armaments companies are responsible for the devastation of not only Japan but to the world, and needs to be accountable for their actions. He says that, “These same cororations are continuing to kill people with euphemisms.” Jacob Grech Ozpeace 0402246491

Tomorrow NFA is declaring peace and we will be proudly putting up our banners in defiance towards Kevin Rudd’s decision to continue his support of uranium mining and exportation, even though his “government announced recently opposition to the proliferation of nuclear weapons.”

The Nuclear Free Australia rally for peace on Saturday 9th August, 2008 will be an exciting day and NFA invites all to accompany us as we march the streets of Melbourne demanding a nuclear free future. Some of the highlights are many guest speakers, Michaela Stubbs from Friends of the Earth Melbourne; Victorian Greens of MLC Southern Metropolitan Region and Ben Peterson of the Melbourne Stop War Coalition are some of the rally speakers who will be voicing their protests.

The Hiroshima day march is about considering the “horror of the dropping of atomic bombs on the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki”, by demonstrating, “we must renew our commitment to nuclear disarmament.” Guest speaker Michaela Stubbs from Friends of the Earth Melbourne, further adds, “If we are serious about disarmament and serious about addressing climate change we must cease the supply of uranium.” Michaela Stubbs Friends of the Earth Melbourne 0429136935

The highlight of the rally for peace is guest speaker Ben Peterson, who will be speaking on behalf of the Melbourne Stop War Coalition, who says that, "Every ounce of uranium that Australia exports adds to the world-wide stockpile of nuclear waste - a toxic legacy for ourselves and for future generations.”

Guest speaker, Sue Pennicuik of Victorian Greens MLC Southern Metropolitan Region says, “The trade union movement is proud to be associated with and support the aims of the annual Hiroshima Day Rally.” For more information and interviews CONTACT:Hillel Friedman on 0417506150 or Margarita Windisch on 9639 8622 or 0438 869 790/ Organised by Nuclear Free Australia
